Xunantunich was once a major ceremonial center located across the Mopan River in the Maya village of San Jose Succotz, just a 40-minute drive from Crystal Paradise. To reach the site, you’ll cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry, followed by a scenic one-mile drive uphill to the archaeological site.
The highlight of Xunantunich is El Castillo, its largest and partially excavated pyramid, which rises over 130 feet above the main plaza. From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Belize’s Cayo District and nearby Guatemala. El Castillo is also famous for its intricate frieze, a band of stucco decoration that once encircled the structure.
A fascinating museum on-site showcases a three-dimensional model of Xunantunich and provides insights into the evolution of the Maya civilization.
