A Journey into the Maya Underworld

Barton Creek Cave, located in the Cayo District, was once a sacred site for the ancient Maya, who believed caves were entrances to the underworld, known as Xibalba. Archaeologists have uncovered ceremonial pottery, fire pits, human remains, and other artifacts within the cave, indicating that it was used for religious rituals and possibly sacrifices. As you paddle deeper into the cave, your guide will point out these remarkable discoveries while sharing insights into Maya history and beliefs.

An Unforgettable Canoeing Experience

This guided canoe tour takes you through approximately one mile of the cave’s winding underground river, surrounded by breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, and massive cathedral-like chambers. The flickering torchlight casts eerie yet mesmerizing shadows on the limestone formations, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The cave is home to a variety of cave-dwelling creatures, including small bats that roost in its ceilings. The calm waters and slow pace of the tour make it accessible for all skill levels, from first-time paddlers to experienced adventurers.
